There is no doubt that table saws come in extremely useful in plenty of different circumstances. But whatever you use them for you must remember that safety has to come first at all times.
When you first buy your new table saw make sure you unpack it very carefully and find the instructions. It is very easy to be complacent and to simply guess how everything works by sight. But it is far better to read the instructions – after all that is what they are there for.
You should also make sure you are completely confident about using it the first time, since it may be the first occasion on which you have ever tried a table saw. Go slowly and ensure you follow the instructions, making certain that everything is working as it should. If you are in any doubt at all, stop and check that everything is okay.
But perhaps the most dangerous time of all is not when you first buy your brand new table saw. It is some months afterwards when you are thoroughly used to using it and you don’t need the instructions any more. A lot of DIY accidents happen because people become too complacent and don’t realise they aren’t paying full attention to what they are doing. This is when things will start to go wrong if you aren’t careful.
In responsible hands a table saw should be a dream to use. It certainly makes light work of many woodworking tasks and there is no reason why you shouldn’t use one safely for many months and years ahead. Quite often the weakest link in the whole process is the person using the table saw, so remember this at all times.
You can help yourself though by ensuring you don’t become distracted while you are using it. In addition to this, you should make some checks before you use it each time, to ensure that it is safe to use and not broken or damaged in any way. If it is you will stand more chance of damaging the saw or worse, yourself.
There is no doubt that common sense will help you to use a table saw completely free of any problems for a long time to come. Safety first is called that for a reason, and if you adhere to it you won’t have any problems at all.
